FTC: Wyndham Hotels Failed to Protect Consumers' Personal Information

The Federal Trade Commission filed has filed a suit against Wyndham Worldwide Corporation and three of its subsidiaries for alleged data security failures that led to three data breaches at Wyndham hotels in less than two years.

The FTC alleges that these failures led to fraudulent charges on consumers' accounts, millions of dollars in fraud loss, and the export of hundreds of thousands of consumers' payment card account information to an Internet domain address registered in Russia.

The case against Wyndham is part of the FTC's ongoing efforts to make sure that companies live up to the promises they make about privacy and data security

In its complaint, the FTC alleges that Wyndham's privacy policy misrepresented the security measures that the company and its subsidiaries took to protect consumers' personal information, and that its failure to safeguard personal information caused substantial consumer injury.  The agency charged that the security practices were unfair and deceptive and violated the FTC Act.

Since 2008 Wyndham has claimed, on its Wyndham Hotels and Resorts subsidiary's website that, "We recognize the importance of protecting the privacy of individual-specific (personally identifiable) information collected about guests, callers to our central reservation centers, visitors to our Web sites, and members participating in our Loyalty Program …"

According to the FTC's complaint, the repeated security failures exposed consumers' personal data to unauthorized access. Wyndham and its subsidiaries failed to take security measures such as complex user IDs and passwords, firewalls and network segmentation between the hotels and the corporate network, the agency alleged.  In addition, the defendants allowed improper software configurations which resulted in the storage of sensitive payment card information in clear readable text.

UAL, CAL pilots to picket United Continental Holdings shareholders meeting June 12

United and Continental Airlines pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int'l (ALPA) will be conducting informational picketing at the site of the United Continental Holdings annual shareholders meeting on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 to mark the passing of a second year without a new contract and to alert management, shareholders, passengers and the media that it is time to complete the end-game negotiations now underway with the Company. If the Company cannot comply with the agreed-upon June 15 deadline to reach an agreement on a Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement, the pilots of United and Continental call on the National Mediation Board to grant our request for a release from mediation.

Who:
United Airlines pilots, Continental Airlines pilots, pilots from other ALPA carriers.

What
Informational picketing at the site of the annual shareholders meeting, Crowne Plaza Hotel, 1605 Broadway, New York, N.Y.

When
Tuesday, June 12, 2012

8 a.m. to conclusion of shareholders meeting

9 a.m. (shareholders meeting start time)

7:45 a.m. to 9 a.m.,  Capt. Jay Heppner, chairman of the United pilots union chapter of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int'l,  and Capt. Jay Pierce, chairman of the Continental pilots union chapter of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int'l, will be available for onsite interviews at the picket line.

Other spokespersons will be available for media interviews.

Where:
Crowne Plaza Hotel

1605 Broadway, New York, N.Y.

Why:
  • We are more than two years past the merger announcement between United and Continental Airlines and we still don't have a Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • United and Continental pilots contract amendable dates are 12/31/2009 and 12/31/2008, respectively.
  • United management often uses the refrain, "Fresh Start," referring to the company's venture through bankruptcy and the consummation of the United/Continental merger. The pilots, whose sacrifices and professionalism made this merger possible, have been waiting for their "fresh start' for nearly a decade. United and Continental pilots continue living and operating under bankruptcy-era and concessionary contracts.
  • Airlines are a service industry and its employees must be recognized if the product is going to be well received. United must respect the leadership role of its pilots and that begins at the bargaining table. The pilots of United and Continental call on United management to honor the June 15 deadline in reaching an agreement on a JCBA.

Mokulele Airlines Receives Approval for use of i-Pads

Mokulele Airlines has received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval for the use of iPads (Electronic Flight Bags) replacing paper on the flight deck.  The use of i-Pads replaces logbooks, manuals, charts and also displays satellite weather.

The 1.5 pound iPad replaces about 15 pounds of paper on each of Mokulele's Caravans saving an estimated 1,400 gallons of fuel per year.  The FAA has granted Mokulele approval to be the first Hawaii based airline for use of iPads in all phases of flight. By using electronic charts and manuals, the safety and efficiency on the flight deck is significantly enhanced. This FAA approval cumulates the results of several months of training and compliance with FAA Advisory Circulars.

Mokulele Flight Service, flying the skies of Hawai'i since 1994, was purchased by TransPac Aviation, Inc. last year. Mokulele offers more than 60 flights a day connecting Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and the Big Island with their fleet of 9 passenger turbine powered Cessna Grand Caravans.  Mokulele recently commenced service between Kahului and Lanai.  New service is planned between Honolulu and Kapalua starting July 1st. The company is headquartered in Kailua-Kona. For reservations & information, visit mokuleleairlines.com, facebook.com/mokulele, visit your favorite travel agent, or call 866 260 7070.

AAA Expects 7.9 Million Stranded Motorists During Summer Travel Season

The summer travel season officially kicked off this week with the Memorial Day holiday weekend, and AAA estimates it will come to the rescue of 7.9 million stranded motorists between Memorial Day and Labor Day

The three maintenance tasks AAA recommends all motorists perform before hitting the road for a summer road trip include:
1.    Inspect All FIVE Tires
Many motorists may be confused when told to check five tires, however AAA has found one of the most frequently overlooked items on a vehicle is the spare tire. When inspecting tires, it's important to know if your vehicle even has a spare. If so, be sure it is properly inflated and stowed. If you cannot locate a spare tire, ensure your vehicle has an alternate solution. Options include an emergency sealant and inflator kit or run-flat tires that allow the car to be driven to a safe location.

"Roughly 1.1 million drivers will call AAA for help with a flat tire during the summer travel season, and many of those problems could be avoided by inspecting the tires and being prepared before hitting the road," said Nielsen. "Tire inspections are simple to perform. The only tools needed are a quarter and a tire pressure gauge."

Begin every tire inspection with a pressure check. "Eighty-five percent of drivers do not know how to properly inflate their tires, and more than half of all cars on the road have at least one under-inflated tire," explained Nielsen.

Always check tire pressure when the tires are cold and the car has not been driven recently. Use a quality gauge to make sure all five tires are inflated to the pressures recommended by the vehicle manufacturer—which is probably not the maximum pressure molded into the sidewall of the tire. The carmaker's recommendation can be found on a sticker usually attached to the driver's door jam, in the owner's manual and sometimes on the gas cap door. Drivers should be aware that the recommended pressures for front and rear tires may differ, and the spare may require yet another pressure. Most space saver spares require much higher air pressures than normal vehicle tires.

Properly inflated tires also can reduce fuel costs during a trip. The Department of Energy reports that correctly inflating all four tires can improve fuel economy by up to three percent, which is equivalent to as much as to 12 cents per gallon.

After making sure all five tires are properly inflated, drivers should inspect the tread depth and overall condition of the tires. Worn tires in need of replacement are much more likely to suffer punctures and other problems.

To check tread depth, insert a quarter into a tire tread groove with Washington's head upside down and facing outward. The tread should cover part of Washington's head. If any area above his head is visible, it might be wise to go tire shopping before you take a long road trip. Be sure to check the tread depth at several points around the tire and across its width, and use the lowest reading.

While checking the tire tread wear, also look for signs of uneven wear or abnormal bulges or other damage on the tire treads and sidewalls. "Taking a few minutes to inspect your tires once a month can help keep you rolling down the roadway instead of being stranded by the roadside," noted Nielsen.

2.    Check and Clean Car Battery
AAA estimates it will assist nearly 1.6 million motorists with dead batteries during the summer driving season—replacing nearly 500,000 batteries at the roadside. Summer heat breaks down car batteries internally and accelerates the rate of corrosion on the vehicle's battery terminals. Both conditions can lead to insufficient electrical power being available, and leave a motorist stranded without warning.

Check the battery cables and ensure they are securely attached to the terminals. Clean the terminals if there are signs of corrosion. It is not enough to simply remove external corrosion; proper cleaning requires disconnecting the cables to clean the hidden areas where they contact the battery terminals.

Depending on local climate and vehicle usage patterns, most car batteries have a three to five year service life. If a battery is nearing the end of its lifecycle, have it tested at a AAA Approved Auto Repair shop or by the AAA Mobile Battery Service to determine if replacing the battery before your road trip might be a good idea.

3.    Replace Wiper Blades and Refill Washer Fluid
Rain, insects, grime and other debris on a windshield will compromise the driver's vision, and safety, if the wipers cannot remove them. Check the windshield washer fluid reservoir monthly or more often if the washers are used frequently. Top it off with a solution formulated to aid in the removal of insects and other debris. Be sure to test the washer spray nozzles for proper operation and aim before leaving on a trip.

While topping off the washer fluid, also check the wiper blades. If blades are worn, cracked or rigid with age, they will not adequately remove rain, grime and other debris that can obscure driver vision. If the wiper blades are sufficiently deteriorated, the metal wiper blade frame could contact and permanently damage the windshield.

Check the wiper blades at every oil change or whenever they fail to wipe the glass clean in a single swipe. The life of a rubber insert is typically six to 12 months depending on its exposure to heat, dirt, sunlight, acid rain and ozone. Streaking and chattering are common clues that the rubber is breaking down and replacement is needed.

Travel Leaders' 2012 Consumer Survey Reveals: American Travelers' "Tipping Point" on Cost of Airfare

As airlines begin to charge travelers and families extra if they would like to sit together on a flight, Travel Leaders Group's latest survey reveals Americans' "tipping point" on the cost of domestic and international airline tickets. For 81.5% of consumers polled nationwide, their tipping point for a domestic airline ticket is somewhere between $200 and $500; and for 42.9% of those polled, their tipping point for an international ticket is between $1,000 and $1,500 dollars. Also, 83.1% indicate that they will spend the same or more on leisure trips in 2012 as compared to last year.  This survey was conducted by Travel Leaders Group from April 4 to May 16, 2012, and includes responses from 855 consumers throughout the U.S.

Domestic and International Airfare Tipping Points:

  • When asked "the maximum you're willing to pay to fly to your domestic destination" the top two individual responses were: "Up to $400"per ticket (33.1%) and "Up to $500" (24.2%).  When looking at combined responses, 81.5% of consumers polled nationwide say their domestic airfare tipping point is between $200 and $500, while 18.5% of those polled indicate their tipping point is up to $600 or more.
  • When asked "What could potentially change that?" with regard to domestic airfare, the top responses were: Funeral (65.5%), Medical needs (44.6%), and Wedding (33.2%).
  • When asked "the maximum you're willing to pay to fly to your international destination" the top two individual responses were: "Up to $1,000" (16.3%) and "Up to $1,200" (10.4%).  When looking at aggregated responses, 42.9% would pay between $1,000 and 1,500, while 8% of those polled indicate that they would pay up to $2,000 or more for an international airline ticket.
Leisure Travel in 2012:
  • An overwhelming majority (93.6%) of those polled say they will take at least one leisure trip in 2012.  In fact, of that group, over 71% have already taken one leisure trip this year and nearly 28% have taken two or more trips so far this year.
  • When asked "Is the total number of leisure trips you anticipate taking in 2012 more, the same or less than last year?" o ver 92% of those polled indicate they will take the same or more trips this year as in 2011.  Only 8% indicate they will take fewer trips.
  • When asked how much they will spend on leisure travel this year, 83.1% of those polled say they will spend the same or more on leisure travel in 2012 than they did last year.  Only 17% indicate they will spend less on leisure travel this year.
Traveling Away from Home:  Travel Leaders Group asked, "For your leisure trip(s) did you or will you ..." (Participants could choose all that apply, so total will not equal 100%.)
